William Smith O'Brien letter to unidentified recipient [manuscript], 1848 Jan 10.

O'Brien writes that he has enclosed a letter from Norton in reply to the one accompanying the letter received and sent it on to him. The "special commission has been useful in bringing to [punishment?] many offenders about whose guilt there can be no doubt. How much better rely upon measures which make each man accountable for his own offenses than upon laws which harass or oppress indiscriminately the innocent and guilty." He adds how much better it would be to eliminate the causes which lead to these 'terrible outrages which disgrace our poor country.'"
